The Cost of Sustainability: Real World Data

Why Go There? Panelists
Certified Commercial Investment Member, Urban Land Institute, and United States Green Building Council South Florida hosted The Cost of Sustainability: Real World Data on July 31st. Topics included Upgrading Your Building to Take Advantage of Economic Incentives, Lessons from Academia, and Why Go There?

Some facts revealed:

  • Energy consumption in commercial office buildings exceeds transportation.
  • Since energy costs are such a significant part of operating costs, reductions in usage has a recognizable impact on NOI.
  • Energy consumption measurements are becoming a bigger factor in determining building values in California.
  • The School District of Palm Beach County built the first LEED Gold-certified K-12 school in Florida. Pine Jog Elementary now serves as an efficiency model in the county's facility management decisions because of its measurable success.
  • Incorporating green management practices is becoming more the norm since sustainability applies to environment and economics.
  • Educating tenants and end users is key to a successful sustainability plan.

LynnAnn Ierna, Director of Property Management, was a panelist at this event.

A VICE ADMIRAL'S PERSPECTIVE ON ENERGY

Vice Admiral Truly
On August 19th, BOMA Ft. Lauderdale/Palm Beaches and USGBC South Florida arranged for Vice Admiral Richard Truly, a retired Vice Admiral from the United States Navy, Naval Aviator, former astronaut, and the eighth Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), to speak about energy.

Vice Admiral Richard Truly is part of a military advisory board on national security comprised entirely of retired Generals and Admirals. They have worked on two reports describing the threats of climate change, the first released in April 2007. In his presentation, the retired Vice Admiral deftly and swiftly connected the dots on how energy consumption and dependency has created a "serious threat" to our nation's security. He described the problems created when conflicts over natural resources arise in fragile societies. He discussed America's dependency on oil and how it drives instability. Did you know in a down economy Americans spent a million dollars per day on energy?

While the actuality of the situation seems dismal, the Admiral also discussed how technology can make a difference. He cited the American spirit of innovation and adaptation as a usable force in finding a solution. Interestingly enough, Admiral Truly pointed out that even global warming doubters should consider making conscious decisions -- after all, waiting for 100% certainty is often a poor battle strategy.
